Or have no fast food places?
Sometimes, old places have to be restored
or rebuilt. To
restore
something is to
reconstruct a place to its original condition.
Old houses, iron furnaces, or places like
Independence Hall in Philadelphia are
examples of things that have been restored.
Other old places have been destroyed
and needed to be
rebuilt
. To rebuild
something is to reconstruct a
replica
or a
model. In 1859, Edwin Drake drilled the
first oil well in the world in northwestern
Pennsylvania.
Drake’s Museum
is a good
example of a replica created to look as it
originally did. It is an outdoor museum.
Fort Necessity
,
Fort Ligioner
, and
Fort Pitt
are
three forts recreated tohelp explain life on
the frontier during the French and Indian
War.Wewill learnmore about these places
in later lessons.
Other famous places of history have been
restored and rebuilt. Near Philadelphia,
there is the
Brandywine Battlefield
and the
Valley Forge Encampment
. There also is the
Washington Crossing State Park
. Of course,
there is the popular
Gettysburg National
Military Park
in southern Pennsylvania. The
AlleghenyNational Portage
, well known for its
canal travel over the mountains, is another
example of a restored area. If you like to visit
an old warship, the
Flagship Niagara
used
during theWar of 1812 can be seen at Erie.
Sometimes business people and govern-
ment work together to preserve our
heritage
. Three well-known examples are
the
Johnstown Flood Museum
, the
Scranton
Historic Steam Town
, and Pittsburgh’s
Heinz
History Center.
Hershey Park is awell-known tourist attraction.
