social services. Some people work to get
tourists to visit places in our state. Places
that provide recreation and entertainment
also fall into the social service group.
Another large job group is
trade
. Trade
is the buying, selling, and moving of
products. This is done by business people
usually for making a profit. While making
chocolate bars and candies is in the
manufacturing field, the selling of these
candies to business people is considered
trade. Making steel products or clothing
items is manufacturing. Selling these
products to business people is called trade.
Trade provides jobs for every 21 out of 100
workers in our state.
Look at the chart on page 38 to find the
next largest group of serviceworkers. There
are11out of every100workers hold jobs in
the government field. This would include
government jobs at the local, state, and
national levels. For example, if you travel to
Harrisburg, our state capital, you will find
many workers in the government office
buildings. Police officers, firefighters, postal
workers, and people who work at military
bases are also government workers.
A smaller group of service workers sells
land, works at banks, or sells insurance.
They are providing financial services. The
financial world deals with loaning and
paying back money. Those who work in
the financial fieldholdeight out of 100 jobs
in Pennsylvania.
The last group of workers is lumped into
three areas — transportation, communi-
cation, and utilities. Only five out of 100
workers hold jobs in these fields. People
who work at airports, train, subway, or bus
stations, and shipping ports have jobs in
transportation. People who hold jobs that
involve television, telephones, radios, and
newspapers are considered to be in the
communication group. Workers who bring
fuel and water to other people are in the
utilitygroup. Peoplewhoalsowork tobring
heat and electricity tohomes, factories, and
buildings are utilityworkers.
You have learned that there are many
kinds of jobs. They are either industrial jobs
or service jobs. Someday, you will have to
decide the type of job you want. You are a
human resource!
