and the Future
O
ur last geography chapter dealswith
the places you can see and visit in
Pennsylvania today. There aremany
natural and human-made wonders in our
state. Many people within the state and
many visitors from other states and
countries visit these attractions. Do you
remember what we call this business? You
have learned that tourism is an important
business in our state. People are interested
in visiting the many places that
Pennsylvania has to offer.
In this chapter,wewill also learnhowwe
are trying to protect and preserve our
environment. The environment is the air,
water, and the land that surround you and
other living things. Pennsylvania is a
beautiful state.
The beauty of our environment was not
always appreciated. When you learn about
Pennsylvania’s history, you will find out
that people did not always take care of our
environment. It was being destroyed. In
the 1930s, somewise people started topass
laws. They wanted to clean up and protect
the air, the water, and the land of
Pennsylvania. They were thinking about
people living in the future, as you and I are
today. Now it is your turn to protect the
environment for your future and for the
future of other people.
Finally, we will learn about some of our
many cities. Nearly seven out of 10 people
live in our cities. We will look at each
region to find the major cities. Then, we
will learn for what each city is known.
