hat is awonder? It is aword that
means something is amazing, or
exciting. A
natural wonder
is
something that has been created by nature.
Nature exists in the air, water, land, and
under the earth’s surface. For example, you
learned in Lesson 2 that many physical
features of a place were formed by nature.
Many landforms and waterforms were
formed by natural processes. The beautiful
soils of the Piedmont and our valleys were
formed by nature. Our scenic mountains
were created by natural forces. Under the
earth’s surface, caveswere createdbynature.
We think of natural wonders as
something to enjoy. However, we can have
natural wonders that are not too joyful. All
of our powerful storms, such as tornadoes,
hurricanes, blizzards, and thunderstorms
are formed by nature. They can cause
much damage.
