Most people of our state’s population are
native-born
. This means that people
choose to live in the same state they were
born. In fact, Pennsylvania has the largest
number of native-born people in our
country. However, people have moved to
Pennsylvania from every continent except
Antarctica. Many Pennsylvanias are Cau-
casian. Almost one out of 10 people are
African-American.ManyAfrican-Americans
choose to live and work in our large
urban centers.
Some of the people are Hispanic-
Americans. There is also a growing number
of Asian-Americans located in our state. A
very small number of people come from the
many islands located in the PacificOcean.
Our least populated place is Forest
County in the northern Allegheny Plateau.
Ourmost populated county is Philadelphia
in the Atlantic Coastal Plain. When the
colony of Pennsylvania was started, more
than nine out of 10 people lived in rural
areas. Today, about seven people out of 10
live in urban areas.
You have learned that human resources
are the people who live and work in an
area. Let us take a look at kinds of jobs, or
occupations
, that Pennsylvanians have.
Many of the jobs that people performhave
something in common. Because of this,
geographers have organized these jobs into
different groups. There are twomaingroups
of jobs. They are jobs in
industry
that produce products, and jobs that
provide a
service
.
