Businesses that do notmake a profit go out
of business.
There are alsomany kinds of service jobs.
A service is work done for others. For their
work, people are paid a certain
wage
, or
money, for so many hours of work per
week. Your teacher provides a service.
Services areprovidedbyyourminister, your
banker, your auto mechanic, your doctor,
and your nurse.
However, some service jobs are
businesses. For example, people who run a
bank provide a service. The owners of the
bank want to make a profit. A plumber
provides a service. He also needs tomake a
profit to earn his or her living. Nurses who
work for doctors and hospitals are workers
who provide a service. However, they do
not own or run a business.
Jobs in Industry
T
here are nine different groups of jobs
that people perform in Pennsyl-
vania. Of these groups, four types are
industrial jobs. They are farming, mining,
construction
, and manufacturing. Con-
struction is work that involves building
roads, houses, or large buildings. Building a
new school or church is construction work.
The chart on page 38 gives the different
types of jobs in Pennsylvania.
You can see that 15 out of 100 working
people are in themanufacturing field. They
are involved inmaking products like steel,
machinery, chocolate bars, or snack foods.
How many other people for every 100

mining? In construction?
Service Jobs

e have a total of 23 people for
every 100 workers who hold
jobs in industry. That means
that a total of 77 out of 100 workers hold
jobs that perform a service. With 32 out of
100 workers, the largest group of workers
provide social services in our state. People
who work to help other people have social
service jobs. People who work at hospitals,
schools, or retirement homes all perform
