Human Resources
W
hy is therea lessononpeople in
a chapter about the natural
resources? That is because
humans are a very important natural
resource.
Human resources
are the
peoplewho live in aplace and thedifferent
kinds of jobs that they perform. We need
people tomeet ourmany needs.
How dowe knowhowmany people live
in a place? A
census
is taken every tenth
year in theUnited States. When a census is
taken, the numbers of peoplewho live in a
state are counted. According to the 2010
census, 12.5 million people were residents
of Pennsylvania. Five other states have
more people living inside their boundaries.
They are New York, California, Texas,
Florida, and Illinois.
Seven out of every 10 Pennsylvanians live
in an
urban
area. This would include cities
and suburbs. That would leave three out of
every 10 people living in
rural
regions or
small towns. Themain centers of population
are Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Erie, and
Allentown. Philadelphia is our state’s largest
city and our nation’s sixth largest city.
“Philly,” as it is sometimes called, is located
along the Delaware River. Pittsburgh is our
second largest city and is located inwestern
Pennsylvania. Allentown is our third largest
city. It is located in eastern Pennsylvania
