used? In changing the environment,
humans have created some amazing
things. Some of our larger dams and
reservoirs, made by people, provide us with
beautiful views. Bridges built over our larger
rivers were human-made. Many streams
have covered bridges built over them. In
fact, Pennsylvanians have built more than
57,000 bridges over their waterforms. For
an area of landour size, this ismore bridges
than any place in theworld.
The tunnels that were dug through the
mountains on the Pennsylvania Turnpike
were constructed by people. Cities and tall
buildings were created by people. There are
many interesting places to visit in a large
city. Zoos andmuseums are popular places
to see. Amusement or recreation parks are
another kind of human-made wonder. You
can enjoy many exciting rides, arcade
games, or activities there.
Up to this point, we have been learning
about wonders as something grand and
majestic. You can also enjoy small wonders.
For example, your authorwas inaweathow
a spider made such a beautiful web at his
mailbox. Rollerblade skating can offer you
excitement. The point is that you can
appreciate large and small wonders that
nature and people have created. You only
need to look around your environment to
see them. Use your senses to enjoy them.

any of our natural wonders are
related to the geographic features
of our state. In Lesson 2, you
learned that we have mountains, gorges,
glens, forests, and waterfalls. Much of our
state’s beauty is now protected by our state
park system.We also havemillions of acres
of state forests and state game lands that
have been saved for people to enjoy. In
2009, more than 875,00 fishing licenses
were sold.
Our state parks provide all types of scenic
beauty. Swimming, boating, camping,
fishing, and hiking are some forms of
recreation you can enjoy. If you travel to
