Chapter 3
Wellsboro in northern Pennsylvania, about
10 miles to the southwest is Pine Creek
Gorge. It is the home to what is called the
Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania
. The gorge is
1,000 feet into the canyon. At
Ohiopyle State
Park
in southwesternPennsylvania, you can
enjoy whitewater rafting, camping, and
biking along the river.
Wealsohavemanyprotectedplaces called
natural areas
inour state. Anatural area is
a special place that is in its original form.
One such place is called the Hemlocks
Natural Area. Here, there are huge hemlock
trees that have never been cut by humans.
The hemlock is a symbol for our state tree.
Wildlife (plants and animals) are protected
in all of our state parks, forests, and natural
areas unless otherwise stated. Thousands of
people can hunt deer or bear in our state
game lands or state forests.
TheU.S. governmenthas anorganization
called the
National Park Service
. Its
main purposes are to protect and preserve
places of great beauty. There are national
parks and forests located in many states.
The National Park Service maintains the
Allegheny National Forest
in northwestern
Pennsylvania. It also operates the
Delaware
Water Gap
innortheastern Pennsylvania.
With such natural beauty, more than 35
millionof our residents visit their parks and
forests. Greater than one million people
from other states and countries also visit
our parks. This provides over 200,000 jobs
in the tourist industry.
Human-MadeWonders
in Pennsylvania
S
ometimes places are built in areas of
natural beauty. There are two major
resort
areas in our state. A resort is
a place built where people travel for
relaxationor recreation.Of course, theypay
for these services. Many resorts are built in
the
Pocono Mountains
, in northeastern
Pennsylvania. The other popular resort area
is located in the
Laurel Highlands
in
southwestern Pennsylvania. Some people
consider
Lake Erie
to be a resort region.
Sometimes places of nature (natural
wonders) are set up for people to see for a
fee. For example, there is great beauty
located in
caverns
. There are eight caves
across our state inwhichpeoplepaymoney
for a guided tour.
Human-made wonders can be found in
history
. History is the studyof past places,
events, and people. Historians believe we
should study about places, people, andpast
events that are important to understanding
our history. In studying history, we learn
about progress. How would you like to
wash your clothes in the nearest stream or
river in the winter? Or hunt for all of your
Indian Echo Caverns inHershey, PA.
