hiladelphia is our largest city and
sixth largest in our country. It was
founded by William Penn in 1681.
Philadelphia comes from two Greek words
whichmean city of brotherly love.
Philadelphia is a busy inland, freshwater
port
. A port is a place where ships and
barges can load or unload goods.
When products are brought to our
country from other countries, they are
knownas
imports
. For example, crudeoil is
an import that is unloaded in Philadelphia.
Factories called
refineries
process this oil
into other products such as gasoline. Then,
the products are shipped to other parts of
our state and country.Whenproducts of our
country are loaded onto ships and sent to
another country, they are known as
exports
. Processed food, clothing, and
machinery are some products that are
exported from the port of Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is one of our country’s
leading cities in banking, insurance,
education, trade, industry, and cultural
events.Many companies have located their
headquarters in the city. Some of the
leading products made in this city are
clothing, printing ink (for this book),
chemicals, petroleum products, machinery,
and types of processed food.
Philadelphia is the home of several
universities, such as Temple, Drexel, LaSalle,
St. Joseph’s, and the University of
Pennsylvania. There are many museums to
