Pennsylvania. The city is named
after the Erie tribes. The city began
as a French fort in 1753.
The population of Erie is 102,000 people.
This port is our state’s fourth largest city.
Erie contains an excellent
harbor
protected by the fishhook peninsula called
Presque Isle. Lake Erie is one of the Great
Lakes. Because of its location, Erie is a
shipping center for many products.
Products can be shipped to the west or
northeast in the Great Lakes. The products
include iron, coal, oil, lumber, grain, and
fruits from orchards. The sandy beaches of
Presque Isle State Park attractmany tourists
in the summer.
There are many smaller cities in
Pennsylvania. Some of these cities are New
Castle, Carlisle, Pottsville, Pottstown,
Chambersburg, Bethel Park, andNorristown.
