Lesson 4: (cont.)
HowDoWe Use Lines of Latitude and Longitude?
Again, unless you are on a mountain or higher elevation, all areas between in the mid-latitudes
are known as the
temperate
region. The temperate climate can have very hot and cold temperatures.
However, most of the time, the temperatures are verymoderate— not too hot or too cold.
The regions north of theArcticCircle and south of theAntarcticCircle are known as the high lat-
itudes (again, higher in numbers). These regions have a
polar
climate— cold, colder, and coldest!
They do have seasons in the polar regions. Their summers are very short and their winters are very
long. Once we reach the NorthGeographic Pole, we are at 90° N latitude. Once we reach the South
Geographic Pole, we are at 90° S latitude. Can you tell us which one is ice andwater, andwhich one
is ice and land?
ACTIVITY 2:
On
Sphere F
, label and color the climate zones and regions of latitudes.
1.Color the tropical zone red.
2. Label this red region as the a) tropical zone and b) low latitudes.
3.Color the temperate zones orange.
4. Label this orange region as the a) temperate zone and b) middle latitudes.
5.Color the polar zones blue.
6. Label this blue region as the a) polar zone and b) high latitudes.
