When you describe the Piedmont region,
it has amixture of farms, fields, forests, and
factories. Many cities have developed in this
region because of its physical features.
Ridge and Valley
T
ravel northwest from the Piedmont
region. You will enter another region
that has different landform features.
This region is coveredwithmountain ridges
and valleys. You have learned from Lesson 2
that a mountain ridge is land that rises
steeply above the surrounding land.
Elevations range from 800 to 2,400 feet
above sea level in our Ridge and Valley
region. This region is about 100miles wide.
Look at the map on page 17. You can see
how this region starts at the southern border
and crosses our state northeast to the
Delaware River. There are also two finger-
shaped, narrow valleys that stretch even
farther to the northeast. You would cross
many valleys and ridges traveling from
Harrisburgwest toAltoona or State College.
Each valley has a specific name. Near the
southern part of the Ridge and Valley region,
there are three valleys. They are the
Cumberland, Lebanon, and Lehigh Valleys.
Together, they are called theGreat Valley. The
soil in the valleys is very good for farming.
There aremany types of farms in this region.
Each mountain ridge also has its own
name. For example, your author lives in the
Cumberland Valley between two mountain
ridges. These mountain ridges are known as
the North and South Mountains. The Blue
RidgeMountains stretch fromChambersburg
east to the Delaware River. Jack’s Mountain
stretches fromHarrisburg to Bloomsburg.
On the western border of this region, you
