T
he Atlantic Coastal Plain is located
in the southeasternpart of our state.
A
coast
is land near a sea or ocean.
The coastal plain is about tenmileswide. In
Lesson 2, we learned that a plain is flat,
level land. The elevation of the land ranges
from40 feet toa fewhundred feet above sea
level.
Philadelphia, our state’s largest city, is
located here along the Delaware River.
Philadelphia also is known as a
port city
.
A port city is where large ocean ships travel
to and from the city with goods and
products.Use themaponpage4 to seehow
these ships enter theDelawareBay from the
Atlantic Ocean. They travel north into the
Delaware River. This river, which empties
into the Delaware Bay, is deep enough for
ocean ships at this location.
If youwere to travel to Philadelphia, you
would see many roads, buildings, and
businesses covering the land. Because
Philadelphia is a port city, many products
are brought to and sent from here. There
are many factories in this area, making
the city a large manufacturing center.
Manufacture
