Five Geographic
Regions
I
nLesson1, you learned that a region is
a large area of land that has some
feature in common. In this lesson, you
are going to learn about the five landform
regions of our state. In Lesson 2, you
learned about the many physical features
we have in our state. Now we can look at
our regions to see what landforms they
have in common.
Locate Erie and Philadelphia on themap
on page 17. If you placed a ruler on the
map between these two cities, you would
pass through five geographic regions in
Pennsylvania. Look at the map to locate
these regions. They are the Erie Plain, the
Allegheny Plateau, the Ridge and Valley,
the Piedmont, and the Atlantic Coastal
Plain. Notice that all of our regions lie in a
southwest to northeast pattern.
You can see the differences on a physical
map of our state on page 19. As you read
The Piedmont region has
many rolling hills and valleys,
and is famous for its farming.
