TheUndergroundRailroad
The Underground Railroadwas a secret
system set up to help runaway slaves from the
southern states escape to freedom in the
northern states and Canada. In 1780,
Pennsylvania became the first state to pass a
law against slavery. Though slavery still
existed in the South, other northern states
also passed laws against it. Many slaves
wanted to escape to the North. The
Underground Railroad did not have trains, but was actually a system of hiding
places, escape routes, and people who helped slaves escape. Thousands of slaves
used the Underground Railroad through Pennsylvania.
Harriet Tubmanwas a former slave who escaped to Philadelphia on the
Underground Railroad in 1849. Shemade 19more trips to lead other slaves to
freedom, andwas never caught.
