Chapter 7
It was the steam engine! They were placed
on locomotives and boats. They provided a
cheaper and faster way tomove people and
trade goods from place to place. Wagons
and canal boats moved goods at four miles
per hour, compared with the railroads
moving goods at 20miles anhour through
all seasons. By canal, it took 28 hours to
travel from Johnstown to Pittsburgh. By
railroad, it took less than three hours!
Canal travel today is mostly for recreation.
