Pennsylvania Begins
Its Industries
F
romChapter 6, you learned about our
struggles to become a free nation. You
also learned about how we set up a
new government with the United States
Constitution and how the Bill of Rights
protected the rights and freedoms of our
citizens.
In Chapter 7, you will learn about how
the state of Pennsylvania slowly grew and
developed its industries. In fact, our state
became an INDUSTRIALGIANT!
Becoming a giant and an industrial
leader didnot happenquickly. Itwas avery
slow process that took nearly 100 years.
First, Pennsylvania had to conquer some
geographical problems. Then business
people had to develop natural resources
into useful products that people needed.
Our state began as a rural colony with
small farms. Farming has been and always
will be an important part of our industry.
Remember, rich soils and religious
freedoms for farmers were two reasons
many peoplemoved to Pennsylvania.
For this part of history, we are adding
another piece of the puzzle — the growth
and development of other, new industries.
More people created more need for goods
and services. If this was not done, our state
could not meet the many needs of its
growing population.
