What Are Growth
andDevelopment?
A
fter youwere born, you slowly grew
and developed from a baby. Now
you are about 10 years old.
Pennsylvania slowly grew and developed
just likeyou.Weare entering the1800swith
our history story. Pennsylvania was a state
that had many resources for the growth of
industry.
Industry
is the making, selling,
andmoving of goods, products, or services.
The goals of industry are to make money
and to keep growing bigger. If we did not
have industrial growth, wewouldnotmove
ahead. Moving ahead means
progress
.
Without progress, we could be livingmuch
like those peoplewho lived in dugout caves
along theDelaware River in 1682.
Let us look at a modern-day example of
industry and growth. When the necessary
parts and technology for digital videodiscs
(DVDs) were invented, it became possible
tomake, or manufacture, these DVDs at a
fair cost. People like your parents and I
could then afford to buy them. The same
thing happened when the television or
radio was invented. Several companies
became very successful. For a business or
company to be successful, they have to
makemoney, or what is called profit.
