Our Pennsylvania Story

Lesson 11:
Our Climate andWeather
In the summer, most of our rain
comes from thunderstorms.
Sometimes, our state does not get
enough rain during the growing
season. A long time of very dry
weather is known as a
drought.
Northern Pennsylvania is cooler
than the southeastern part of the
state. Highmountainsmake
summers cool andwinters long. The
land southeast of Harrisburg has the
longest growing season. It has rich
farmland. There can be asmany as
200 growing days in its season.
Inwestern Pennsylvania there
are often quick changes in the
weather. There is alsomore rain
and snowstorms.
Theweather along Lake Erie is
different. The Erie Plain is themost
northern part of the state. The
summers are short and cool. The
winters are long, snowy, and very cold.
