fossil fuels are used to heat homes andmake products in factories. SouthDakota is the leading pro-
ducer of gold in our country.Missouri is the number one producer of lead in theUnitedStates.One or
more of the following natural resources (buildingmaterials) can be found in every state in theMidwest
region: cement, stone, gravel, and sand.
Besides recreation, many products aremoved over the rivers andGreat Lakes of this region (and
railroadsaswell).For example, Duluth,Minnesota, andChicagoareGreat Lakesports known for ship-
ping grain to all parts of theUnitedStates and other countries. Iron ore and forest products can follow
the same water routes on the mighty Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Because this region is well
known for cattle and other livestock farms, the Midwest is famous for its meat packing and food
processing industries.
