Manufacturing industries, such as processing food andmaking farmmachinery, are also amajor
part of theMidwest economy.TheMidwest has a well-developed transportation network. Thismeans
that ships, trains, trucks, and airplanes carry many goods and products from factories to people.
The Great Lakes and large rivers of the region are used to move products from state to state, or to
other countries.
There is another kind of belt known as the Manufacturing Belt. The large cities located along
Lakes Erie and Michigan are very well known for making different products. These cities would be
Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, andMilwaukee. For example, Detroit is known as “Motor City.”This city is

many other parts to make cars and trucks. Toledo, Ohio, makes glass for vehicles. Akron, Ohio is
known for its tires.
