Physical Features of Canada
Youhave learned that physical geography is the landforms andwaterforms of a country or region.
Many of the physical features found in theUnitedStates also are found inCanada. In fact, both coun-
tries share borders with the Great Lakes, the world’s largest bodies of fresh water. The prairies and
mountains of the United States reach into Canada as well. Let’s take a closer look at the land and
water features of Canada.
ACTIVITY 1:
Use your physical map of Canada in your
Atlas Buddy (AB)
on page x. Canada hasmany freshwa-
ter and saltwater features. These include oceans, bays, straits, seas, gulfs, lakes, and rivers. On the
physical map of Canada on the next page, label the water features that are
boldfaced
below. Check
off each number after you have completed labeling your map.
1.Canada isborderedby the
ArcticOcean
to itsnorth, the
AtlanticOcean
to itseast, and the
Pacific
Ocean
to itswest.
2.Next, label two seas.
Beaufort Sea
is located in northwest Canada. The
Labrador Sea
is located
in northeasternCanada off the coast of Newfoundland.
3.We are going to label four bays.
HudsonBay
is located in north-central Canada.
JamesBay
is far-
ther south of Hudson Bay; it looks like part of Hudson Bay.
Baffin Bay
is located off Baffin Island
near Greenland. And the small
Bayof Fundy
is located betweenNovaScotia andNewBrunswick.
This bay has the highest tides in theworld.Many tides are over 50 feet high.
4.Do you remember what a strait is
(LLB=Lesson 13)
?There are two straits to be labeled.They are:
a)
HudsonStrait
, which flows eastward from theHudson Bay to the AtlanticOcean, and b)
Davis
Strait
, located between northeasternCanada andGreenland.
5.Glaciers formedmany of the lakes of Canada.Here are some of the larger ones.
Great Bear Lake

Great SlaveLake
are located in theNorthwestTerritory.
LakeWinnipeg
canbe found in south-
ernManitoba.We use the termHOMES to help you learn the names of theGreat Lakes.They are
Huron, Ontario,Michigan, Erie
, and
Superior.

Gulf of St. Lawrence
is located in northeasternCanada.TheSt. LawrenceRiver empties into
this gulf.
7.Canada and the United States share a border at
Niagara Falls
in westernNew York and
southernOntario.
8. Because ships cannot climb 184 feet at Niagara Falls, the
WellandCanal
was built to allow ships
to travel between LakeErie and LakeOntario.
9. Look for the capital letters on themap to help you label themajor rivers of Canada.The rivers are
located from east towest on your map.
