hy did the town of Philadelphia
and the colony of Pennsylvania
grow so well? One main reason
was Philadelphia’s good location. From
geography, you learned that Philadelphia is
located north on the Delaware River. The
river was deep enough to handle ocean
ships. Philadelphia became an important
port town. The port was protected from
AtlanticOcean storms. Philadelphiabecame
amain trading center for the colonies.
Many settlers from European countries
reached Pennsylvania. They had heard of
the freedoms and cheap land they could
have in this colony. The European settlers
were doing well. However, the same could
not be said for the Native Americans. The
European settlers brought diseases such as
measles and smallpox. The Native
Americans hadnever been exposed to these
diseases. Their bodies had no way to fight
these diseases.ManyNative Americans died
from these diseases.
Tribes slowly began to disappear ormove
westward. Year after year, settlers bought
more land from the tribes. William Penn
insisted that the Native American tribes be
paid for their land. The tribes were paid for
