Chapter 5
race. The African-Americans represent
another race. People from the continent of
Asia are yet another race. Finally, people
from Europe are still another race. People
from different races also can be from
different countries. There are many ethnic
groups throughout the world. Koreans and
Chinese people are from the same race, but
are fromdifferent ethnic groups. African and
Native Americans can be frommany nations
and many ethnic groups. One’s religion is
also a part of one’s ethnic group. People of
the Jewish religion are frommany different
ethnic groups.
Some people make unfair conclusions
about a race, religion, or nation. There is no
reason to dislike people because they are
different. If a person does this, it is called
being
prejudiced
. William Penn thought
that people of all races, religions, and
nations, including the Native Americans,
could live together peacefully inhis colony.
People are different and so are ethnic and
racial groups. This is called
diversity
. We
can and should appreciate our differences.
We also can and should appreciate how we
are alike. Both add richness to our lives.
Perhaps we can use the food we eat as an
example. Most of us eat many different
foods. We need a balanced diet for healthy
living. What if we just ate cabbage the same
way for everymeal? Itwould get veryboring.
Many Ethnic and
Religious Groups
Move to Pennsylvania
W
e are still in the 1680s in our
story. Itwasnot just theQuakers
who moved from England to
Pennsylvania. People whomove from their
country to another country are known as
immigrants
. Many of our early immi-
grants came from European countries to
settle in Pennsylvania. Several religious
groups were from England, Germany, and
Switzerland. Because of their different
religious beliefs, theywerenotwelcomed in
their homelands. This was their main
reason for leaving their home countries.
Most of the early religious groups were
farmers. Before theymoved, they had heard
that they could buy land for cheap prices.
This became another reason for leaving their
countries. Once the settlers arrived and
bought the land, they had a big problem.
Can you think what the problemwas? Here
