On November 19, 1863, the cemetery was
dedicated. With a cold wind blowing, themain
speaker gave a two-hour speech. Then, President
Lincoln spoke for only twominutes using 272 words.
His speech became known as The Gettysburg
Address. The President felt that his speech was a
“wet blanket,” but his words have been remembered
as a symbol for the honor and courage of themen
and women who served and fought at Gettysburg.
By researching the Internet, muchmore can be
learned about the specific details of the battle. And,
muchmore can be learned about the small towns
that were affected by General Lee’s invasion of
Pennsylvania by logging into a state website known
as Civil War Trails.
The Civil War became the launching pad for
tremendous industrial growth. It introduced an era
which is the focus of the next lesson.
