James Buchanan, Pennsylvania’s President
Buchanan had a fine home in Lancaster. He called the homeWheatland. Two children,
a
niece
and
nephew
, livedwith him. Uncle Jimwas strict, but the children loved him.
James Buchananwas elected to be the President of the United States. Hewas almost
70 years old, but he seemed younger. Hewent toWashington to live in theWhite House.
His little niecewas now a young lady and became
Mistress
of theWhite House. The
nephew also helped the President with his work.
As President of the United States, Buchananwas very busy. Thesewere the days
before theWar Between the States. Abraham Lincolnwas then elected to be President.
Buchananwas glad to leave theWhite House. Hewas happy to go home toWheatland.
Buchanan’s house in Lancaster still stands.Wheatland is kept as it waswhenBuchanan
lived there. Perhaps you can go to see this pretty home. Seeing this housewill help you to
remember the Pennsylvania boywho became President of the United States.
